Critical evaluation of the SHARP motorcycle helmet rating
نویسنده
چکیده
The Department for Transport introduced a safety helmet assessment and rating program (SHARP) for motorcycle helmets sold in the UK. The mechanics behind the part of the scheme that uses a rigidsphere head-plus-helmet model to estimate the peak headform acceleration in oblique helmet impact tests, is assessed and the approximations exposed. Finite Element Analysis, of a deformable helmet with a realistic shape, is used for comparison. The statistical analysis of motorcyclists’ impact velocities, sites and impact type, used to weight the SHARP impact results, is also reviewed. Conclusions are reached on the meaning of the derived oblique impact test results, and validity of the star rating.

In response to political pressure, the state of Florida repealed its mandatory motorcycle helmet-use law for all operators and passengers older than the age of 21, effective July 1, 2000. Using monthly data and a multiple time-series design, the authors assessed the effect of this law change on serious injury and fatality rates for motorcycle riders aged 21 and older. Controls for serious injur...
متن کاملFinite Element Analysis of Helmeted Impacts and Head Injury Evaluation with a Commercial Road Helmet
This research was conducted to assess the safety performance of a commercial motorcycle helmet, homologated by the most relevant current standards and currently available in the market. The evaluation was based on accurate reproduction of translational impacts specified by the ECE R22.05 standard to assess motorcycle helmets. The Finite Element numerical framework was vali...
متن کاملIntrinsic motivation and psychological factors on wearing helmet among motorcyclists in Gorgan City, Iran, in 2016
Background: Motorcycles have a higher rate of fatality than cars within the same distance travelled. Head injuries are the main causes of death in motorcycle crashes. The objective of this study is to investigate intrinsic motivation and psychological factors on use of a helmet among motorcyclists in Gorgan City, Iran, in 2016. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional survey was conducted a...
متن کاملUniversal Motorcycle Helmet Laws to Reduce Injuries: A Community Guide Systematic Review.
CONTEXT Motorcycle crashes account for a disproportionate number of motor vehicle deaths and injuries in the U.S. Motorcycle helmet use can lead to an estimated 42% reduction in risk for fatal injuries and a 69% reduction in risk for head injuries. However, helmet use in the U.S. has been declining and was at 60% in 2013. The current review examines the effectiveness of motorcycle helmet laws i...
متن کاملModeling motorcycle helmet use in Iowa: evidence from six roadside observational surveys.
This paper investigates the influence of type of roadway, weather conditions and other factors on motorcycle helmet use rates in Iowa. Using data from six statewide roadside observational surveys of motorcycle helmet use, a bivariate probit model is estimated. The applied methodological approach allows for potentially interrelated choices of motorcycle helmet use by drivers and passengers to be...
